Postmortem

Project Description

This is a shmup (or cute 'em up) game where a cat gets rid of distractions like cat toys and laser pointers to get to the master. The original inspiration comes from the cat, Frida, that my boyfriend is having. She always meows at the door to get attention even during the final week. Therefore, I created this game about a witch trying to focus on her final exam whereas the cat wants to play and at the end of the game, if you defeat the witch, she will eventually fail her final exam but the cat is happy & satisfied.

What Went Right

  • I started my thought process by creating sketches of the bullet patterns really helped me visualize my ideas and code them in unity.
  • I used Trello to keep track of my tasks and it was really helpful and boosted my efficiency.
  • It's my first time creating an animation with Adobe Animator and I'm pretty satisfied with it.
  • It's also my first time creating a background music that's not 8bit style. It's hard to learn but in the end I did create some thing that can be used in the game.
  • While creating the game I cut out some parts so that I'm able to finish the project on time. Looking back, I think those decisions are pretty accurate.
  • I managed to create levels with difference in difficulty. I wanted to make the game more toward the hardcore gaming side and I think I pretty much fulfilled that goal.

What Went Wrong

  • I underestimated the amount of time I would spend on coding the bullets, which made me give up some functions that I wanted to incorporate in the game.
  • I did not get to create any sort of background image/effect, which makes the background look really boring.
  • I only created animation for the final boss, which make the game feel a little cheap.
  • I did not get to create sprites for the bullets

Future Goals

  • Create sprites for the bullets
  • Create more animation for player and enemies
  • Finish what I cut out from the game and if the game becomes too difficult with those things I would consider having power up items in the game.

What I Learned

  • When creating a plan, overestimate the time but not underestimate it.
  • I learned a lot about coroutines and the InvokeRepeating() function. I also become more familiar with rotations and RigidBody.velocity.
  • I learned using Ableton Live 10 Lite and simple music composing techniques.
  • I learned using Adobe Animator, especially the warp tool.
