Postmortem
Get in the Coop! » Devlog
What Went Right:
- the game comes out to be very close to what I wanted it to be
- I actually get a lot of time to do debugging and I think I solved all that I've seen
- Michell's overall aesthetic looks great
- David's chicken animation looks very cute in the game
- We includes all UI menus necessary: help menu, pause menu, loading scene instructions, title scene animations, game-over scene pausing the time scale in the game to show timer.
What Went Wrong:
- When I was trying to fix the code for chicken behavior, I spent three days trying to work with the messy code I did in the very beginning. On the fourth day I decided to start a brand new code and clean everything up and it worked (I think it was because there were conflicting conditions that I didn't notice before). I think I should have start the new code on the second day or the third day because looking back I do feel like I wasted a lot of time.
- I didn't check the model's inherit rotation before writing a rotation code for it and I spent two hours trying to figure out why my code does not work (which was actually because even though it says 0,0,0 in the inspector, the chicken was facing right when being exported).
- We started off with having a lot of team communications but after the first two weeks we were just doing our own tasks and didn't really talk/ask for feed back. Although the game turned out fine, I do think we missed some opportunities to make it a better game.
- There was once Michell and I were working in the same scene but we forgot to tell each other about that. Luckily we were working on different things so it didn't influence anything, but I will try to remember to tell team members if I want to work on a certain scene in future projects.
Future Goals:
- Level Design: Difficulty ramping with different chickens
- Ranking/Leaderboards : Amongst friends or high score
- Tutorial/Helpful Tips (repetitive UI) [in loading screen & in-game]: Aid players in their goal
- Stabilizing AR plane
- More Chicken Models, more animations: (maybe the rubber chicken we did for fun)
What I Learned:
I think I have some improvement in coding skills and also through this project I really get the habit of writing pseudo codes. I think it's both helping me clear up codes I need to write and making it easier to understand when I look back to old codes. Team wise I think we have a pretty good dynamic going but we really should ask for feedbacks and talk more about the game during the process. This is also my first time working with AR and I learned mostly about plane detection and occlusion (didn't include this because it recognized weird planes).
